Another winter in
Hal 16. Mostly maintenance jobs.
Coelan varnish on deck and cabin needs refreshing
-
I have done some shopping for this job. Coealan is rather expensive, but 6 years has passed, since last coating. Counting that in, price is actually very fair. Note the spraygun from Wagner. The vertical faces require spraying on the varnish. I can’t wait to learn how to use that thing.

-
Sanding, sanding and more sanding. Coelan varnish is really hard, when sanding. We only need a smooth, lightly sanded surface to create a mechanical bonding to a new layer of varnish. We use 150 and 180 grid sandpaper. The sanding takes a lot of time.

-
Before sanding and varnishing, we are removing all the hardware. Unfortunetaly these were bonded very well to the surface. The track for the headsail was a struggle to remove and the coelan varnish, glasfiber and some of the decking came off, when removing it. This is now glassed over.

-
Cabin top and decking will continue to be white. We are adding white paste to the Coelan Varnish and will apply approx. 5 layers, as it will only cover lightly. First we need to spot varnish to build up and get a more even surface to varnish. We have clear-coated all edges against the tape, so that the white varnish cannot seep under the tape. This will leave us with a sharp edge.

-
Coelan varnish goes on the deck. The white paint has poor coverage, so you need to varnish more layers than necsessary, which is expensive and more work.
However, you can varnish 1 layer after another - non-stop, which is amazing. Even down to 5 degrees C.
It’s the humidity that determines the drying time, not the temperature.
-
For the deck and cabin top, this is what I have used: Clear Varnish: 3 liters. Matt Varnish: 2 liters. Thinner: 4-5 liters. Thinning with approx. 50%. Brilliant White paste: 12 bags. 1 bag per 375 ml.
7 layers white on deck to cover dark areas. 2 layers matt finish. Cabin top: 4 payers white and 2 layers matt finish.
I might use another product for the deck, next time.
-
Just started prepping for varnish with spraygun. Lot’s of masking off. This is very time consuming. After that, I need to remove even more hardware. Then sanding for a mechanical bond with new layer of varnish. Wiping all surfaces off berfor spraying. But need min. 5 degrees C for varnishing with Coelan.

Water ingress
-
It caught me by surprise, that I found a leak in starboard side, just in front/above the keel entry point.

Cockpit aestetics
-

Don’t like how this looks. I will redo the fronts of the cabinets in both sides. Should be a challenging and fun project.
Metal work on the boom and other small jobs.
-

Worked on a solution for this last season, but that didn’t solve the problem. Will try somthing else.
-

After replacing the ruddershaft, last season, there was a squeaking noise, with every move of the rudder. I shaved of 2 m.m. of the aluminium block, which solved the problem.
